Balarama Purnima

Lord Balarama is the first physical expansion of Lord Krishna. These two are identical, sharing the same identity and essence, differing only in complexion: Balarama is fair as a spring cloud, while Krishna has the complexion of a fresh monsoon cloud. Lord Balarama represents the attitude of service, executing all the creation work of Krishna.

The Services and Forms of Balaram Ji

Lord Balarama assumes four different forms (Chatur-vyuha) to serve Krishna: Vasudeva, Pradyumna, Sankarshana, and Aniruddha. He also serves directly as Lord Ananta Shesha — manifesting as the Lord's bed, umbrella, shoes, and resting place. He is the original spiritual master, and it is impossible to approach Lord Krishna without first obtaining the mercy of Lord Balarama.

Around 5,000 years ago, when Lord Krishna descended onto this material planet, He was preceded by Lord Balarama, who appeared as the son of Rohini.

Lord Balarama is depicted as a 16-year-old boy full of strength and youthful vigor. He wears deep blue clothes, a forest flower garland, and has His hair tied in a topknot. He wears beautiful earrings that brush His cheeks, matching His bracelets, armlets, and anklets. Physically, He possesses a broad chest, a deep voice, and immense physical strength.

Notable Pastimes of Lord Balarama

Lord Balarama performed many heroic pastimes in the forests of Vrindavan:

• Dhenukasura and Pralambasura: He killed the ass-demon Dhenukasura in the Talavana forest and defeated the demon Pralambasura.
• Chastising the Yamuna: When Yamuna Devi refused to shift her course to allow Him to bathe, Lord Balarama dragged her with His plow, forcing her to submit.
• Chastising the Kauravas: He dragged the city of Hastinapur with His plow to rescue His nephew Samba.
• Marriage to Revati: He married Princess Revati from a previous yuga cycle, who was brought down to size by His plow.
• Romaharshana: He killed Romaharshana Suta for failing to show respect to Vyasadeva's seat.

The Mercy of Lord Balarama

Lord Balarama is the source of spiritual strength (*bala*). He appeared as Lakshmana with Lord Sri Rama and later as Lord Nityananda with Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. Devotees worship Lord Balarama to obtain the strength needed to advance in spiritual life.

Balarama Purnima marks the official end of the five-day Jhulan Yatra and the completion of the first month of Chaturmasya.
