What is Caturmasya Vrata?
Catur means four, Masya means months, and vrata means austerity. The Caturmasya Vrata is observed for a period of four holy lunar months, starting from the day after Deva Sayana Ekadashi in the Ashada month (June – July) and concluding on Utthana Ekadashi in the Kartika month (October – November). Some Vaishnavas also observe it from the Full Moon day of Ashada until the Full Moon day of Kartika.
Sayana & Utthana
It is understood that Lord Vishnu falls asleep in the Ksheer Sagar (the Ocean of Milk) resting upon Shesha Naga (Ananta Shesha) on Sayana Ekadashi. He awakens from this yoga-nidra after four holy months on Utthana Ekadashi in the month of Kartika.
Four Months of Dietary Restraints
| Caturmasya Period | Traditional Lunar Months | Fasting Restrictions |
|---|---|---|
| First Month | Sravana (Jul – Aug) | Fasting from Shak (green leafy vegetables) |
| Second Month | Bhadra (Aug – Sep) | Fasting from Yogurt (curd) |
| Third Month | Asvina (Sep – Oct) | Fasting from Milk |
| Fourth Month | Kartika (Oct – Nov) | Fasting from Urad Dal (pulses/beans) |
The Goal of Austerity
The Caturmasya Vrata is observed by all classes of seekers (Karmis, Gyanis, Yogis, and Bhaktas) for the attainment of their respective ends. For devotees of Lord Krishna, the ultimate goal of observing these vows is to attain Krishna-prema (pure love for the Supreme Personality of Godhead).
Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu Himself and our predecessor Acharyas strictly observed Caturmasya to set an example. Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu spent this period at Jagannath Puri (Purushottam Dham) absorbed constantly in **Krishna-katha**, kirtan, and hearing.
Srila Prabhupada's Instructions
Chaitanya Caritamrita Madhya-lila 4.169 (Purport):
"Caturmasya should be observed by all sections of the population. It does not matter whether one is a grhastha or a sannyasi. The observance is obligatory for all asramas. The real purpose behind the vow taken during these four months is to minimize the quantity of sense gratification. This is not very difficult... On the whole, during the four-month period of Caturmasya one should practice giving up all food intended for sense enjoyment."
Vishnu Rahasya (Lord Brahma to Narada Muni):
"If one accepts all these Vaisnava austerities and observances with devotion, one attains the supreme destination, O Narada. One who desires within himself to execute all these Vaisnava austerities and vows, his sins obtained within one hundred births are destroyed. If one is exclusively devoted, peaceful, takes a daily bath, is fixed in vow, and worships the Lord during these four months, he goes to the abode of the Lord."
Internal Purification
Beyond physical dietary changes, Caturmasya is a time to cleanse our mind and attachments. One should carefully give up attachments for material assets (house, ornaments, wealth, etc.) and habits that obstruct spiritual progress.

Padma Purana: Within the heart of one who is full of anger, pride, or lamentation on the state of his wife or sons, there is no possibility of Krsna and Gauranga being manifest.
Historical Background
Caturmasya is the four-month period (July to October) during the rainy season when Lord Vishnu is said to sleep (Yoga-nidra). Devotees observe various vows during this period — such as avoiding certain foods — as an austerity to please the Lord. This tradition is followed by all Vaishnavas.
Spiritual Significance
Observing Caturmasya vows helps control the senses and deepen one's spiritual practice. Each month has specific observances that purify different aspects of one's life and bring one closer to Krishna.
