Disappearance of Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura

His Divine Grace Śrīla Saccidānanda Bhakti Vinod Ṭhākur was born on September 2nd, 1838, in Bir Nagar near Navadwip, in the state of West Bengal in India. He was given the name Kedarnath Dutta by his parents, Bir Chandra Dutta and Jagan Mohini Devi Dasi.

His appearance took place at a critical and historical juncture for the Gaudiya Vaishnavas, when the pure teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu and the Goswamis were almost lost due to corruption and pseudo-sects. The original devotional scriptures were so scarce that it took Bhaktivinoda Thakura eight years to locate a single copy of the Caitanya Caritamrta. He single-handedly re-established the teachings of Lord Caitanya, re-discovered the birth site of the Lord (Yogapitha) in Mayapur, and brought pure Vaishnavism back to the forefront of society.

The Pioneer and Grandfather of the Movement

Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura is revered as the pioneer and the grandfather of the modern Hare Krishna Movement. In 1896, he initiated worldwide preaching by sending his English book, The Life and Precepts of Sri Caitanya, to learned institutions and libraries across the globe.

He prayed to the Lord for a "ray of Vishnu" to assist him in spreading the teachings of Sri Caitanya Mahaprabhu. In response to his prayers, his illustrious son, Srila Bhaktisiddhanta Sarasvati Thakura (the spiritual master of ISKCON's Founder-Acharya, His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada), was born. Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura also famously predicted:

"Soon there will appear a personality who will preach the holy name of Hari all over the world."

Today, it is clearly understood that His Divine Grace A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami Prabhupada is indeed that predicted personality who delivered the holy name to every corner of the earth.

An Exemplary Magistrate and Prolific Writer

Bhaktivinoda Thakura served as an excellent magistrate under the British regime and solved many critical and complex legal cases. It took only five minutes for him to solve a case that would take his contemporaries two hours. Even the British Government was astounded by his efficiency and superhuman capabilities.

Despite his heavy governmental responsibilities and householder duties, he wrote over a hundred books, poems, and songs glorifying Lord Krishna and His devotees. He gave the world immortal works such as Sri Harinama Chintamani, Bhajana-rahasya, Jaiva Dharma, Kalyana Kalpataru, Navadwipa Dhama Mahatmiya, and Saranagati.

Final Years & Secluded Bhajan

In his final years, Srila Bhaktivinoda Thakura performed intense nirjana bhajan (secluded worship) at Surabhi Kunj in Navadwip, Bhakti Kuti in Puri, and at Bhakti Bhavan in Calcutta. In 1914, at the age of 76, he disappeared from this material world to enter the eternal pastimes of the Lord.
