Historical Background

Vasant Panchami marks the arrival of spring on the fifth day of the Shukla Paksha of Magh month. According to the Puranas, Goddess Sarasvati appeared when Lord Brahma sprinkled water from his kamandalu. The festival is celebrated by worshipping the goddess of knowledge and by rejoicing in the arrival of spring. In Vrindavan, Lord Krishna performs the Vasant Rasa Lila with His beloved gopis near Govardhana Hill.

Spiritual Significance

Lord Krishna declares in the Bhagavad Gita (10.35) that He is the flower-bearing spring among seasons. This day is also known as Sri Panchami and Gyan Panchami. It is considered an Abhuj Muhurat — an extremely auspicious time for beginning any new endeavor. Devotees worship Goddess Sarasvati, the goddess of knowledge, music, and the arts.
